Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Protex Limb Protector different from other protective devices on the market?

Protex Limb Protectors are simple, effective and affordable.  Made of specially formulated, durable polyethylene, these
protective covers are clear to allow for constant viewing of the area of concern.  The patented special feature -  the
double-elasticized opening -  allows the initial band to deflect water spray in a shower, while the second, inner band,
forms a ledge in the interior to catch any seepage that may get past the initial band.  The Limb Protectors can be
applied single-handedly if necessary, and without the need for complicated additions, such as ties, tourniquet  closures,
Velcro straps or vacuum devices.

How many times can the Protex Limb Protector be used?
A single product, with proper use and care, should last the duration of recovery, whether for a surgery site, a cast,
dressing, etc., often several weeks.  Some patients have reported using the same product effectively for many months.
However, we recommend replacing a product that is contaminated with bacteria, such as from wound seepage, or is
mildewed, which is a common occurrence with products used consistently in water.

Are these products considered disposable?
We have coined the phrase Single Patient Multiple Use (SPMU) Disposable to most accurately describe our reusable yet
disposable products.  Basically, they are considered along the same lines as a disposable razor.  They can be used
until they are no longer needed, or for some reason are no longer effective, but are affordable enough to be replaced
when necessary to avoid the possibility of re-introducing bacteria or merely for hygienic purposes.

Are Protex Limb Protectors safe to wear on wet surfaces?
All Protex Limb Protector leg products are made of specially formulated non-slip polyethylene which is made to be worn
on wet surfaces.  However, it is always important to use caution when standing or walking on wet surfaces.

Are Protex Limb Protectors only for casts?
The Protex Limb Protectors work wonderfully over casts, but also may be used for wounds, dressings, rashes, surgery
sites, sutures, IVs, PICC lines, and just basically anything that need protection from damaging moisture during a
recovery process.  Specialized products are available for the knees, mid-arm areas and torso.

Can the products be used for swimming?
It is not recommended the Protex Limb Protectors be submerged.  Once applied, the devices immediately are filled with
air, which, if not released when being submerged, forces the product to become a flotation device, and the inner
pressure can cause the elastic to pull away from the limb, releasing air and replacing it with water.   While we realize that
if an adequate vacuum is created, which can be accomplished when air is removed effectively, submersion is possible,
we DO NOT recommend or authorize submersion.  Showering is the recommended method of bathing with use of a
Protex Limb Protector.

How do Protex Limb Protectors answer needs and concerns regarding issues of infection control?
Preserving the integrity of a healing site is always important during recovery.  Wounds must be kept dry to promote
healing and prevent infection or re-infection, such as with diabetics or those with low immunities.  Water can carry
bacteria directly into the body through even a small incision or scrape.  Casts and dressings must be kept dry in order
for the covered area to heal properly and without unnecessary replacements which can prolong recovery.   Skin under a
cast or a dressing must be kept dry to prevent moisture from causing subsequent infections.  IVs and PICC lines must
be protected from damaging moisture to prevent forming a direct water path for bacteria to enter the body and to
prevent too frequent or unnecessary replacements.  Protex Limb Protectors are not just protective devices, they are
preventive devices as well.

When should a Limb Protector be replaced?
While an intact Limb Protector may be used indefinitely, it is important to discard products that have become
contaminated with mildew or bacteria from wound seepage rather than attempt to ineffectively clean or wear a
contaminated item.  Should the device become damaged or for other reasons is no longer effective, it should be
replaced.  The Limb Protector line is very affordable, and products are sold in pairs so an extra can be on hand if
needed.  There simply is no reason to use a contaminated or ineffective item.

How does the Protex Limb Protector work?
The patented double elasticized closure allows the patient to stretch the opening over and around the area of concern
and does not require the use of complicated and constricting straps, Velcro, tourniquets, vacuum devices or adhesive.
This special feature allows the item to be applied without pulling or dragging across sharp edges or tender areas.  The
clear specially formulated polyethylene allows for constant viewing of the site for peace of mind.

Why not just use a garbage bag?
Garbage bags are for garbage.  The use of garbage or grocery bags is probably the most common makeshift protection
device.  Unfortunately, it is not only ineffective, but can be dangerous as well.  All plastic bags contain slip, which makes
the slippery feeling in bags.  This makes them easy to open, but certainly not meant to be worn on wet surfaces.  The
oversized openings then must be drawn to the limb, either with adhesive or tourniquet-like closures, which allow water to
pool in the gathers above the cinch.  Often the excessive gathers are enough to draw water directly into the interior of
the bag, rather than prevent entrance.

Are Protex products latex-free?
All products manufactured by Protex Medical Products, Inc. are guaranteed 100% latex-free.
